Fatal Crash Shuts Down I-80 on Sunday
One woman died yesterday in a three vehicle accident on I-80, on the eastern edge of Cheyenne.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol says Stephanie Gustafson from the small Laramie County town of Carpenter was killed.
Gustafson was in the second to last car of a long line of vehicles that were slowed down because of an earlier accident that caused a fuel spill, and blocked the westbound lanes of I-80. Authorities say a tractor-trailer combination driven by James Black of Iowa slammed into the line of cars and they say there is no indication that Black braked before the collision.
The tractor-trailer hit one car, causing it to go into the median, and then struck the rear end of the car Gustafson was riding in. All three drivers were injured, and Gustafson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened just before 11 a.m. and closed I-80 in both directions for about four hours.
Highway Patrol will turn over the results of its investigation to the Laramie county district attorney to decide if any criminal charges will be filed.
