Curiosity didn't kill the cat on Monday, but it certainly had lots of people calling police about what they thought was a wild mountain lion.

It turned out to just be a large domestic cat.

Police received several calls on Monday about what appeared to be a cougar roaming in North Casper near the Events Center. One woman even called K2 News inquiring about the alleged animal.

Casper Police then sent an evidence tech team to check out the reported feline. According to Sgt. Deahn Amend, responding officers also thought the cat was a cougar at first glance. Officers then took images of the animal using a high-powered lens and confirmed that it was in fact a cat.

Specifically, the animal was a Maine Coon, which is a breed of domestic cat. The large cat is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America and is also the official state cat of Maine.

Police aren't exactly sure what the Maine Coon was doing behind the Casper Events Center.

While the animal was not a cougar, Sgt. Amend says the department appreciated the calls from concerned citizens.
