Students Watch as Demolition Begins

Students from Southridge Elementary School took a special field trip Wednesday morning to watch as the demolition began on their old school building.

The students are currently finishing out the school year at Westwood Elementary, but they were excited to watch as their old classrooms were torn down.

"I'm glad they let us watch because I get to see my school one last time before they tear it down," said 4th grader Olivia Hawley.

Administrators decided to tear down the old facility because they said it was unable to support new technology. "It's served us very well, but we've just reached the point where the building was limiting some of the programming we want to do," said Principal Rick Skatula. "It's bittersweet, we're sad to see it go, but at the same time, we're very excited to see what's coming."

The demolition work is expected to take place over the next few weeks.  Skatula said he hopes they will break ground on the new building by June, and hopes that building will be ready by July or August of 2012.
