NC's Gabby Johnson to play for Casper College

Gabby Johnson, a key component of the dominating front line that led Casper Natrona to the Class 4A state championship this season, signed a national letter of intent Tuesday to play for Casper College.

Thunderbird Coach Dwight Gunnare says keeping the Fillies star at home was a top priority in this year’s recruiting efforts. “I am very excited. I believe she was one of the top basketball players in the state this year and anticipate her having a very positive impact on our program.”

Johnson was outstanding during the state tournament run, but particularly during the championship game against Cheyenne East. She led her team and all players on the floor with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Johnson, who also played on Natrona’s state championship volleyball team, is a two-time all-state selection. She averaged 12 points per game (second in the conference) and 6.6 rebounds during her senior season. She ranks sixth all time at Natrona in rebounds and steals.

Gabby is a great kid who did nothing but get better and better as the year went by,” according to her high school coach Doug Diehl. “She was a critical part of NC’s run through the state tournament. I have no doubt she will have a great career at Casper College.”

Johnson and her Filly teammates have the chance for a rare trifecta in Wyoming prep sports. They won state in volleyball and basketball. Johnson also throws the weights for the NC track team, which is favored to be in the mix for a state title.
