Brett Smith: 7 Days from the NFL Draft

Due to poor audio quality on the phone call, here's the transcript of the 5/1 phone conversation between Brett Smith and K2's Patrick Quinn.

PATRICK: The NFL Draft is just 7 days away, what's your mindset right now?
BRETT: I'm just trying to stay relaxed. It's hard to not to think about it. I'm just trying to control what I can control. Work out, stay in shape, and just wait. I understand, it's just kind of a hurry up and wait process. So, that's how I'm doing right now.
PATRICK: And we don't have to get into specifics, but how many teams have you talked to, or have contacted you? Can you give us any sense of a number?
BRETT: Shoot. I've talked to a few. I couldn't even give you a number. Just because you don't know who's interested and who's not. It's kind of a vague perception of what the team's interest is. I honestly couldn't tell you. It's tough to say.
PATRICK: Do you feel like you did all you could have done in this off season to best prepare yourself? Is there anything you would have done differently?
BRETT: No, I think I did everyting I possibly could. I worked out a lot for the Combine. And that didn't work out. So, I went back to work to get ready for Pro Day. Then I came back home, and I've been working hard here at home, and throwing as much as I could, and participated in the workouts at the teams' request, went on a couple visits. That's about all I could do. I feel like I was proactive in the process. I think I did all that I could.
PATRICK: How important was it for you to work out with other quarterbacks, and the coaches as well? But having Blake [Bortles] and Keith [Price] right there...how important was that for you?
BRETT: It was good. Because we were working towards the same goals so I'm rooting for those guys. I can't wait to hear their names called. From a competitive stand point, just to understand that we're all working towards the same goal. So, going out, and working hard with each other, trying to correct each other, and also from a competition stand point, we're really pushing each other and seeing how we stack up against each other, and I think that only made us better.
PATRICK: Where are you going to be next week? With family and friends? What does your set up look like?
BRETT: I'm going to be home. I don't know if it's going to be at my house. I'm probably going to be a nervous wreck. I might just go play golf or something. But we'll see. I haven't officially decided, but I know I'm going to be home in West Salem [Oregon].
PATRICK: This is a question a lot of Wyoming fans are interested in. I know the Broncos are looking at you. Would it mean something special to play in Denver where you know you have a Wyoming base watching you, or is it really just any team, you'd love the opportunity?
BRETT: Yeah, any team, I'd love the opportunity. I think the proximity to Wyomoing would be cool, btu at the same time, I just want to find a place to play.
PATRICK: How much does a position like in Denver with Peyton [Manning] where it's someone you can learn from, or is it more the coaching staff that you're looking at? What would be the ideal situation?
BRETT: You know, I don't know. I think just any situation that I step in, I'm just going to pursue that like I'm the starting quarterback. I understand that probably won't be the case right out of the shoot. But that doesn't matter. I'm just going to approach it like I'm the starter. Wherever I end up, I end up. I'm going to help the team in any way I can, and know my role, and accept it, and embrace doing whatever role I'm asked to do.
