Tanker Crash Near Wheatland Closes I-25
A tractor trailer tanker carrying crude oil crashed on I-25 two miles north of Wheatland early Tuesday morning, closing the interstate in both directions for several hours.
The crash, which happened shortly after 3:00 a.m., resulted in about 800 gallons of oil spilling onto the roadway and median. The tanker was carrying nearly 9,000 gallons of crude oil.
Clean-up efforts shut down the freeway in both directions for nearly 8 hours. Several Agencies worked to clean-up the spill, including WYDOT, Highway Patrol, the Wheatland Fire Department, and the Department of Environmental Quality.
The driver, 55 year old Torin Williams of Johnstown, Colorado, was not injured, and no other vehicles were involved. Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Townsend says Williams told troopers he swerved to avoid hitting a deer on the road.
No citations were issued in connection with the crash.
