Wyoming Looks for Juvenile Detention Alternatives

By Lindsay Joy, ljoy@k2tv.com

After recent reports criticizing Wyoming's juvenile detention system, three counties are taking action.  Sweetwater, Laramie, and Campbell County are partnering with the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative.

The Initiative is a program that works in 36 states to keep low risk kids out of detention centers.  Members of the Initiative say these alternatives can only work with the support of the state and counties, and so far they say the support has been very encouraging.

The pilot program is currently operating in three counties but members of the initiative have met with officials from other counties, and they say it will likely expand to other parts of Wyoming.
