Horse Racing At The Fairgrounds

Casper, Wyoming - The sound of pounding hooves competed with the cheers as horse races returned to The Central Wyoming Fairgrounds. The event, 2 weekends of single horsepower speeds and plenty of excitement brought fans in as the races kicked up some dirt.

The third annual horse racing event gave Casper a burst of adrenaline as horses roared down the track. The races created an atmosphere that fans can't even describe.

“It is hard to put into words. It is so exciting rooting your horse along,” said one fan.

These events, in their third year, came after a 19 year hiatus when popularity dipped. Today popularity is on the rise and everyone is getting in on the action.

“I think it’s exciting to see how the crowds show up and really get into these races. The first year it was here I was watching and I heard one of the greatest statements when the guy said 'I don't know a thing about horse racing, but by golly I sure love to bet on something, and I get to bet on horses today.” said State Representative Tom Walters. “It was just great to see that mix of people out, betting on the horses, enjoying the beautiful weather.”

The races brought in jockeys and horses from all over as the sport is revitalized and the fans are part of that.

“When people come out and you can see the excitement on their faces, the same excitement we have, that really gets us pumped up and tells us we're doing something right,” said President of Wyoming Horse Racing, Eugene Joyce.

Although the adrenaline brings fans in, some say the work the horse owners do are just as exciting.

“Well the rush, all I have to say about it is, is watching the owners that put all the time and effort into racing these horses bringing them out here to run. That's where the enjoyments at,” said another fan.

The Central Fairgrounds will host more races next weekend starting early afternoon on Saturday.
