Athlete of the Month: Sydney Montoya

The East Volleyball team started the season as back to back champs. Sydney Montoya tells us the urgency for one more title was there.

"We've won two state titles in the past and that just fuels you, you know. You want to feel that moment again and you'll do anything to do it."

How does 3 peat sound? "Great, it's amazing. I love it," Montoya said. "It's so special. We've worked so hard throughout the season and during the off season and we took no time off."

While thanking her teammates, her older sister Jessica helped too.

"Just working hard you know. It comes back to all of my family who pushed me," She said. "My sister who always had me in the front yard playing when I was 4 years old, so just experience I guess."

"She is always solid and knows she comes to play. She is one of our most consistent players, she's a great kid," Coach Dan Box added. "She is sort of our glue, you know."

Off the volleyball court,  you might find Montoya doing something like this.

"Yeah I like art," Montoya said. "I love to paint. I love to draw, ceramics, all that type of stuff. Water color, that's my favorite."

With artistry comes tattoos, of the 4 masterpieces Montoya has, the first was all her own.

"I got it for my 16th birthday and I actually drew it when I was in 8th grade. I found it and I was like wow I got to get it, so I asked my mom and she said, 'well I guess."

"It's a dream catcher with a volleyball in it, if that makes sense."

Despite the pain, Montoya finished what she started, with the ink and on the court.

"She's passionate about it. She brings it to other girls, so they get excited together and they've been playing together for so long. Yeah, she loves volleyball," Box said.
"No matter where I go, it'll always be a part of my life. And I'll never forget it," she said.

The passion for the game and the tattoo made a lasting imprint on her life.
