K2 Gridiron Report: Tongue River Eagles

IN THE PAST 2 YEARS...TONGUE RIVER HAS BEEN ONE OF THE TOP TEAMS IN 1A...REACHING THE STATE FINALS BOTH TIMES. BUT THIS YEAR WITHOUT HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT AND A VERY GOOD SENIOR CLASS...THINGS ARE LOOKING A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT FOR THE EAGLES.

"IT'S QUITE A BIT OF CHANGE. WE HAVE BIG SHOES TO FILL. THE SENIORS LAST YEAR HAD A REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THOSE GUYS BUT I MEAN WE'RE JUST TRYING TO CARRY OUT WHAT THEY HAD STARTED FOR US. ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS THAT PAUSE AND THERE WAS THAT MOMENT OF 'OH NOW ALL THE EYES ARE ON ME. NOW I'M THE HEAD COACH'  I'M KINDA WAITING FOR COACH SCOTT'S VOICE TO CHIME IN."

AND WHILE SCOTT'S RETIREMENT WAS A TOUGH BLOW...THE OTHER MATTER AT HAND IS REPLACING THE ALL-STATE TALENT ON THIS TONGUE RIVER TEAM.

"YOU DON'T REPLACE THOSE INDIVIDUALS. BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO IS SHOW THE WORK THEY PUT IN. SO THE ONE THING WE'VE ENCOURAGED THE YOUNG GUYS TO DO IS FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE. I WAS A STARTER MY FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR SO I HAVE THAT EXPEREINCE FROM THE UPPER CLASSMEN...THOSE JUNIOR AND SENIOR CLASSES...FROM BOTH STATE GAMES AND I KNOW HOW I'M SUPPOSED TO ACT AND SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE MY TEAMMATES UP ON THE FIELD AND MAKE SURE I'M PUSHING THEM AS HARD AS THEY GET AND THEY GIVE EVERYTHING THEY GOT."

BUT DESPITE THEIR YOUTH...THE EAGLES HAVE GOTTEN THEIR EXPERIENCE THESE PAST TWO YEARS.

"THE ONE THING I LOOKED AT THE OTHER NIGHT WHEN TALKING TO SOME OF OUR JUNIORS WAS THEY'VE ACTUALLY PLAYED A COMPLETELY EXTRA SEASON OF FOOTBALL THE LAST TWO YEARS BETWEEN THE PLAYOFFS AND THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. THOSE EXPERIENCES PAY DIVIDENDS IN THE LONG RUN AND WHAT I'M SEEING NOW IS A REALLY MATURE GROUP OF SOPHOMORES. WHICH MEANS THE  UPPERCLASSMEN ON THIS TEAM ARE READY TO BRING WHAT THEY LEARNED TO THE FIELD THIS YEAR. GOING IN TWO YEARS IN A ROW AND GETTING SECOND PLACE IT HURTS A LOT. SO WE'RE OUT HERE TRYING TO GET BETTER EVERY DAY AND GET BACK TO THAT AND GET THAT PLAQUE. I FEEL LIKE WE'VE BEEN CLOSE ENOUGH TO EACH OTHER THESE PAST TWO YEARS AND WE'RE ALL STARTING TO GET CLOSER EACH AND EVERY PRACTICE WE HAVE."

AND WITH WEEK 1 COMING UP FAST...THE EAGLES WILL SOON FIND OUT IF THEY HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THAT PUSH AND HOIST A PLAQUE AT THE END OF THE SEASON. REPORTING IN CASPER I'M ANDREW HAUBNER K2 SPORTS...
